Recruiting

“Cal Poly, Premier Rugby, Premier Academics” An original premier division team, the Mustangs have been a near continuously top 25 ranked team over the past decade.  From 1989 to 1995 Cal Poly dominated SoCal rugby and was second only to Cal in the Pacific region.  Cal Poly Rugby began to surge again in 2001 with a victory over Ohio State at the National Championship tournament.  2004 saw the Mustangs defeat defending National Champion, Air Force Academy in the semi-final round of the Final Four.  The Mustangs lost a hard fought, close match with Cal for a #2 national finish, their only loss that season.  This was followed by numerous strong appearances in the Collegiate National Championship tournament.  In Oct 2011, Cal Poly finished #8 in their first College 7’s National Championship appearance.  Cal Poly has produced more than 20 All-Americans since 2004 including five Eagles (four since 2004).  Most notable among them is Eagle legend Kevin Higgins.  Kevin Higgins was one of Rugby’s premier players and was recently named by USA Rugby, an All Time Eagle XV’s for 1976-2000.

The same excellence is found in our academics and university.  Cal Poly is the #28 ranked public university in the nation, #7 among Regional Universities, and #1 among Public Universities in the western region.  We rank #3 for highest undergraduate salary and 82% of our 2009-2010 graduates were employed or attending graduate school within 12 months of graduation.  Simply put, Cal Poly grads get jobs and get paid very well, even in these tough economic times.  Additionally, Cal Poly is the #1 Public Master’s University in the western U.S. for the 19th year in a row.  When you consider this and living in the geographic center of the Central Coast of California, you have an amazing college experience that will always bring you back to San Luis Obispo long after you graduate.  The climate, beaches, mountains, coastal lifestyle, food, and campus will call you back with the memories of your Cal Poly experience.

At this time, we are unable to provide direct admissions assistance (tags).  We do provide admissions counseling and advice, as well as an acceptance assessment based on experience and data we have collected.  We encourage all interested players to apply to Cal Poly regardless.  The application window is from 1 Oct to 30 Nov, annually.  Currently, fall is the only application window. For students that do not get accepted, Cuesta Junior College is a great option.  Any transfer student may apply when they have 60 semester or 90 quarter transferable units.  One to four small scholarships ($1000-$2500) are awarded annually from Cal Poly’s own Kevin Higgins Foundation which serves as the long term investment vehicle for Cal Poly Rugby.  Additionally, USRFF offers their own Kevin Higgins scholarship valued at $1000, incoming rugby players are highly encouraged to apply as one of the ten scholarships is set aside for a Cal Poly freshman.

Club development has been extensive both on and off the pitch.  Most recently we have created Mustang Rugby Inc. (MRI).  This is a non-profit  503(c) corporation dedicated to supporting and advancing the Cal Poly Rugby Football Club.  It has allowed us to fund technology such as Sports Code Elite and provided the funds required to secure our current head coach, Dave Burnett.  A native of Sydney,  Australia,  he has previously coached at Harvard University, Scots College(Australia), Sydney Junior Rugby Union, and most recently, Woollahra Colleagues Rugby Football Club.  Prior to coaching, Dave Burnett played loose forward and center for teams in Europe, the United States, and Australia.
