In what must be the first ever of its kind, an all collegiate Rugby Sevens tournament, local teams Cal Poly and the Mustangs advanced to the finals in the Bowl and Cup divisions of the 1st annual West Coast Collegiate tournament. Cal Poly met perennial powerhouse St. Mary’s in the final, storming back from an early deficit with three second half tries only to run out of time, but not effort, in the closely contested final. The fast-paced final delighted the crowd as the teams matched score after score, with the visitors barely hanging on for a 31-28 victory. The Mustangs, Cal Poly’s B team, shook off two early losses to UCLA and Davis to win the Bowl Championship with victories over Loyola Marymount and Cal Maritime, the latter a 19-5 drubbing. Rugby Historians are still combing the microfiche to document another all collegiate Rugby Sevens tournament. Cal Poly will next move on to Moraga October 29th and 30th, looking for a spot in the National Qualifier and certain amount of revenge against the squad from St. Mary’s. Determined at the tournament, the top teams from the west will play in USA Rugby’s Sevens Championship in Florida, Dec 17 and 18th. Also up for grabs is an invitation to the Collegiate Rugby 7’s Championship televised on NBC in June. NBC has stepped up its coverage of Collegiate sevens and Rugby in general in anticipation of the return of Rugby to the Olympics in Rio 2016. The Network will also televise the Final to The Rugby World Cup at noon on Sunday, October 23 when the hosts New Zealand take on the French for the Webb-Ellis trophy. San Luis Obispo, CA– The Cal Poly Mustangs are pleased to announce the
appointment of new head rugby coach David Burnett.
Burnett comes to Cal Poly after successful coaching stints at Harvard University,
Scots College (Australia), Sydney Junior Rugby Union, and most recently, Woollahra
Colleagues Rugby Football Club.
“We are excited to have David join Cal Poly Rugby,” said Charles Zanoli, Cal Poly’s
Director of Rugby. “He brings a lot of experience and knowledge of the game with
him. David knows how to get the most out of his teams and push their skills to a
higher level.”
Prior to coaching, Burnett played loose forward and center for teams in Europe, the
United States, and Australia.
“I am really looking forward to joining the Cal Poly Rugby program. It’s a program
that has a great foundation and tremendous history in central California,” Burnett
commented. “Cal Poly is a world renowned university for academic excellence
and I’ll be looking to draw upon the players intellectual abilities to gain a deeper
understanding of the game.”
Burnett will lead the Mustangs into action at the end of October in the team’s
opening match against Chico State in the 2nd Annual Archibald Cup in San Luis
Obispo.
Cal Poly Rugby was established in 1965 and has spent the last 46 years as one of the
