Cal Poly 1st XV finishes fall pre-season undefeated; Women notch first victory

The Cal Poly 1st XV beat Santa Barbara Rugby Academy 41-22 on Saturday to improve their record to 4-0 for the fall term. The Mustangs have scored at least 40 points in each of their matches so far.

“In preseason rugby the process is always more important than the results, but to win all four matches through the term is very pleasing,” Head Coach James Tesoriero said, “to score 40 or more points in each match is a reflection of the type of rugby we are trying to play.”

Cal Poly opened the match with two quick tries in the back line from Mark Grzanich and Ivy Adair. Senior Prop Nathan Sylvia also joined the fun in the opening minutes, dotting down one of three tries for him on the day.

Santa Barbara Rugby Academy responded with two tries of their own before the end of the second half. Cal Poly maintained control throughout the match however and scored four more tries to close out the game.

Cal Poly will play their next match January 14th at home in a rematch against Santa Barbara Rugby Academy to start off the Mustang’s winter season. Other non-conference matches in the winter include fixtures against #2 Cal, #4 BYU and a friendly against conference rival #20 San Diego State.

“We are scheduled to play some of the best College teams in the country between now and the D1a season, so we will need to find further improvement in order to compete, but we have identified several areas where can improve on the Fall’s performances,” Tesoriero said.

Cal Poly conceded an initial lead to the Gauchos, but came back to take a 20-7 lead going into the half. The women exploded for 31 more points to rout UCSB by a 37 point margin, notching their first victory as a club.
