Cal Poly Warm Up with Friendly at UC Davis

Cal Poly Rugby will play their first 15s match of the winter rugby season this Saturday in a friendly against UC Davis. The Mustangs will travel north with 55 players for two matches against the Aggies and one match against the Sacramento Capitals club side.

This is the first of only two friendly pre-season matches the Mustangs will play before their first Division 1A match against UC Santa Barbara on the 25th January. The other friendly will be against UCSC in Santa Cruz on Saturday 19th January.

It’s a jam-packed winter schedule for Poly that sees a few new faces come into the Californian conference of Division 1A. Cal Poly, St Mary’s & UC Davis, have been joined by Stanford, Sac State, UC Santa Barbara and Santa Clara in 2013. On top of these matches Cal Poly will also travel to Berkeley on the 9th February for a cross conference friendly against PAC 12 favorites Cal, and then to Central Washington on April 13th for the final match of the regular season.

After an up and down 2012 15s season, Cal Poly Head Coach Dave Burnett know his guys have a lot of hard work ahead of them if they are to finish on top of the D1A Californian conference.

“When the guys returned to campus at the beginning of the week we spoke a lot about setting new, higher standards for ourselves in terms of how we train and play every match, no matter who the opponent.” Coach Burnett said. “So far the guys have embraced this competitive training ethic. We had about 60 players out a couple of times this week for some pre dawn fitness session to get us back to match fitness.”

Words of encouragement by senior players following the first dawn fitness session of the winter Rugby season.

“Im looking forward to seeing how the guys put their words into action tomorrow” Burnett said.
