The Mustangs excited for Moraga clash

The Cal Poly Mustangs, fresh off their 22-20 win over Cal just over a week ago, will head up to Moraga this Saturday the 10th March to face another top ranked opponent, St. Mary’s College.  Currently ranked 4th in the nation, St. Mary’s is coming off a 76-19 win against UCLA in Los Angeles last weekend.

Although the win against the Bears was a memorable one, Mustangs captain David Schaefer knows it is not a time to get carried away.  “It was a great win by the guys, but it’s just one win, and seasons aren’t made up of just single wins.” Schaefer said. “We’ve had a great rivalry against St. Mary’s so far this season, they’ve tipped us in a couple of very tight 7s matches, so we’re really excited about the game this Saturday as it’s our chance to settle the score.”

The Mustangs have made a few changes from the team that beat Cal.  Senior second rower Bobby McNeal returns to the field along with Senior back rower Joe Saldana.  The only injury replacement for the game is Junior Alex Frost coming in for sophomore fullback Dom Ferri who is still resting from a concussion he sustained against the Bears.  Landis Nasser, who was selected in the All Tourney team of the 7s National Championships in Texas last December, will take Ferri’s spot at fullback with Frost moving to the wing.

The match in Moraga kicks off at 1pm.  Cal Poly Rugby is encouraging all alumni and supporters in the Bay area to come out, on what is forecast to be another beautiful day, to support the Mustangs in this big Division 1A match up.
