The Cal Golden Bears came away victors over the Cal Poly Mustangs with a solid 79-26 final score, but the Mustangs managed a bonus point for scoring four tries and outscored Cal in the second forty.
Cal showed up to play right from kickoff and took advantage of the Cal Poly mistakes they forced by applying pressure. The set piece match was fairly even throughout, but the Golden Bears were able to convert tries on mauling lineouts four times throughout the match.
At the intermission Cal was clearly running away with the game after building a 57-0 lead.
The Mustangs came out in the second forty and showed their heart and desire by continually attacking Cal. The outcome was Cal Poly outscoring Cal 26-22 after the break.
The try zone was found by junior lock Bobby Mcneal, freshman fullback Dom Ferri, and junior wings Landis Nasser and Jake Gersh.
The Mustangs are looking forward to matching up against Claremont College in LA for their final outing of the season.
The conditions in Davis were perfect as Cal Poly was just too physical and persistent for the Aggies, leading to a 48-12 victory for the Mustangs.
An outstanding overall team performance by the Mustangs, including eight tries scored by six different players, was enough to come out clearly on top despite a gritty performance from the young Aggie team.
The Mustangs came out strong and displayed their strength and physical dominance in the forward pack early. However, the Aggies held off the Mustang attack for almost the first quarter of the match. The Mustangs continued to keep the pressure on and maintained the majority of possession throughout the match.
Cal Poly found the try line three times in the first half and allowed one Davis player across, bringing the halftime score to 17-5. In the second forty the Mustangs opened up the match and the new look lineup began to click. Matt Verga took advantage of his first start this season at fly-half by keeping the Aggies guessing and the entire backline did a good job of converting opportunities.
The Mustangs that found the try zone were senior lock Charlie Hamilton, senior lock Nick Sullivan, junior wing Landis Nasser, freshman fullback Dom Ferri, and two tries each for senior prop Kris Osterloh and junior wing Jake Gersh. Dom Ferri also added conversions on four tries.
Cal Poly is looking forward to clashing with the top team in the country Cal Berkeley next Satuday, April 23rd in San Luis Obispo.

The Mustangs again got off to a slow start and St. Mary’s took full advantage by handing the Mustangs a 57-17 loss despite a much stronger second half by Cal Poly.
Cal Poly began with strong go forward and physical play right from kick-off. However, ball retention in breakdowns and open field turnovers plagued Cal Poly throughout the match. The Gaels took full advantage of these mistakes with their fluid hands and ability to swing the ball quickly immediately after a turnover.
It seemed to take until the second forty for the Mustangs much changed lineup to get their feet under them, the Gaels held a one sided halftime lead of 30-0.
However, Cal Poly came out of the gates fast after the break and pounded in three physical tries, shifting the momentum of the match and giving the home crowd something to get excited about. The first Mustang try was by senior eight-man Eddie Varea and the next two by super senior prop Kris ‘Osty’ Osterloh.
The Gaels responded to the Mustang rally well and regained composure for the last stretch of the match, sneaking in two late tries to decisively put away Cal Poly.
The Mustangs will have two weeks to prepare for their next match and look to turn around the current three game losing streak against the UC Davis Aggies on Saturday, April 15th.
The Mustangs will host the St. Mary’s Gaels at the sports complex fields on the Cal Poly campus.
