Cal Poly Shows Dominance Over UCLA

Monday, January 24th, 2011

On a more than perfect day for Rugby in Westwood the Mustangs took on a fiery Bruin team and after a hard fought battle by both teams Cal Poly came out with a convincing 41-24 win over UCLA.

The Bruins came out strong and put the Mustangs on their back foot early with the opening try, set up by a strong line break and long run by the UCLA number 7. The Mustangs quickly answered back with a 65m break by freshman outside center Dominic “The Future” Ferri.

A few minutes after the first Mustang try they showed skills with ball in hand and collaborated for a beautiful team effort allowing Dominic Ferri to score his second try on the day. A long gap in scoring ended with the Bruins scoring against a strong Mustang goal line defense.

Stuart Sharpe scored the last try of the first half after a great display of skill by fly half Steffen Thomas, Sharpe converted the points after to bring the half time score to 19-14.

The second half was a strong show by the Mustangs. Charlie Hamilton scored the first try of the second half bringing the score to 24-14. David Shaefer added the next 5 points with a nice run of his own. Collin Malcolm scored the next two tries to make the score 36-14 and make the match look like it was pretty much over. The Bruins, however, scored two more tries before the end of the match to put a bit of pressure on Cal Poly.

The game was evidence of strong passion for the game by both teams. Both sides showed no sign of fear of their opponent and played that way the entire match. Tension rode high at some points and small tussles stopped the game a couple times but no cards were ever passed out.

The second sides for both teams also matched up on Saturday. Cal Poly won that game 34-0.

The Mustangs next game will be in San Luis Obispo February 5 against Claremont for another CPL preview.

Mustangs Off to a Good Start with a Convincing Win Over Gauchos

Sunday, January 16th, 2011

Playing in ideal conditions in Arroyo Grande, Cal Poly overcame a physical showing to top UCSB 53-19 in their opening Southern California Ganey Cup Match.

The Mustangs came out of the gate strong, putting the pressure on Santa Barbara and Charlie Hamilton punched in the first try within 5 minutes. After some fluid backline play, Landis Nasser broke the Gaucho defensive line for an impressive midfield break away ending in a try, which he converted.

Cal Poly showed a lot of force and good organization throughout the game. Santa Barbara had trouble getting much going at any point in the matchup. The Gauchos had two tries in the first half and one in the second half. The three tries Santa Barbara came up with were lapses in the Mustang defense which the Gauchos took advantage of with some good ball skills.

The Mustangs also had tries scored by Kris “Osty” Osterloh, David Zealer, Sam Chaknova, David Shaefer, Colin Malcolm, and Dominic Ferri had 2. Landis Nasser converted 2 of his kicks, Stuart Sharpe and Dominic Ferri added a conversion each as well.

Cal Poly’s B side also had a convincing win over the UCSB second squad, and Cal Poly’s C side easily topped the Arroyo Grande Men’s Rugby Club.

The Mustangs are looking forward to next weekend’s games at UCLA, which should prove to be closely contested matches.
